More than £30,000 raised to help those affected by the war in Ukraine

An Evening of Words and Music for the People of Ukraine, in collaboration with Stratford Music Festival and the RSC, took place on Sunday 8 May and was a huge success.

The evening featured readings from actors Jim Broadbent, Mogali Masuku and Samuel West, from Shakespeare and contemporary writers, along with Michael Collins conducting the evening which featured The State Anthem of Ukraine (Shche Ne Vmerla Ukrayina), Max Richter’s On the Nature of Daylight, Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra in A Major K.622 (which Michael performed), Barber’s Adagio for Strings Op.11 and Mozart’s Symphony No.41 ‘Jupiter’ in C Major K551.

Huge thanks goes to the generosity of all the Swan players, Michael Collins, and the actors, who kindly performed for free by waiving their fees. Several Ukrainian families, newly arrived in the area, were also in the audience for the evening.

This one-off event aimed at showing solidarity and support for those affected by the war in Ukraine, raised more than £30,000 and will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Ukraine humanitarian relief.

With help from an anonymous donation, more than £30,000 was raised by the event and will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian Relief effort.
