Community

Learning and Participation Programmes

Between 2010 & 2023, The Swan has delivered a programme of community engagement in care homes, mainstream primary, secondary and SEND schools and community settings across Stratford-upon-Avon, Birmingham, Worcestershire and Herefordshire in support of our residencies and regular concert series.

Initially, most of this engagement centred on Stratford, resulting in a very loyal and regular audience for our concert series, a strong Friends membership group and the formation of a Dementia Arts Network to enable Arts Organisations to work together in the Town and strong local partnerships.

Over time, this support has grown and seen us develop and deliver projects across the region, most notably our composition and instrumental projects with Priestley Smith School for visually impaired children and young people in Birmingham, our tour of Herefordshire schools, bringing our six SEND themed videos to life and our new residency at Warwick Schools Foundation, working together with Warwickshire Music Hub. Each project is bespoke and builds on the requirements of each partner, made clear to us through close consultation and collaboration at all stages of project development.

Our vision is to engage each community across age groups, economic and social divide and underpin National thinking on education and wellbeing.

Our new model of immersive residency (which commenced in September 2018) has learned from this broad experience. It’s not ‘same-old, same-old’, but a recognition that the community around each concert venue has very different needs and that each community responds tenfold when engaged with and participating in the process of creativity.
