About the Concert
Summer’s Eve Concert – an evening of theatre, film & music at Cardiff Castle
Join us for the an open air evening family concert at Cardiff Castle, celebrating the contribution of the armed forces, veterans, and NHS services during the pandemic.
In addition to our performance there will be an evening of theatre, film & music, culminating with an exhilarating fire eating, flame and pyrotechnic display.
A specially adapted version of the play ‘Little Manfred’, from the author of the world renowned play and film ‘War Horse’. The shortened version will be staged, for the first time, by the Soldiers’ Arts Academy.
A short film project, called: ‘Veterans Stories’, will be shown on big-screen. The film project relates the stories of some of our Welsh veterans and travelled all over Wales to capture their powerful, touching testimonies and memories of a life in service from WWII to present day.
Also on stage will be one of our fantastic veterans, Maurillia Simpson, who will be singing (Wembley Stadium anthem singer/Songs of Praise), supported by Chris Hatt (musical director of Hamilton/Billy Elliot) and the wonderful Military Wives Choir. There will also be some poetry readings and dance performance by veterans live to screen, accompanied by the orchestra
Visitors will be encouraged to visit the ‘poetry wall’ up on the battlements, to read poems from the poetry session held in the new memorial garden, launched earlier in the day; a quite reflective space that will surround the statue of the Abandoned Soldier at Cardiff Castle.
The Swans will be joined on stage with conductor Bruce O’Neil, Head of Music for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
