Composers often take great pains to distance their music from any obvious external meaning or image but this is certainly not the case with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Each concerto was published alongside an appropriate sonnet by the composer himself. Lines from the poems appear at precise
moments in the score which convey seasonal events such as birdsong, storms, a barking dog, mosquitoes and even drunkenness. Instead of the more commonly used harpsichord the continuo part will be played by guitarist Mark Ashford, who also appears as soloist in Vivaldi’s most well-
known guitar concerto.
