Schumann (arr. David Le Page) Fugue No. 3 from Six Fugues on the name B.A.C.H., Op. 60
John Adams – Shaker Loops
Shostakovich Adagio from Lady Macbeth of Mtsemsk
Schumann – Piano Concerto

Conductor – Michael Collins
Piano – Charles Owen

The apex of German Romanticism and an American classic of visceral minimalism. Schumann’s popular Piano Concerto began life as a single movement Phantasie. With the encouragement and foresight of his wife Clara it became the full three movement work we know today. The contrasting elements of reflection and exuberance are handled in a skilful and thrilling fashion. John Adam’s Shaker Loops was formed from the ashes of a discarded string quartet, Wavemaker, which explored the idea of looped phrases and oscillating patterns. The instrumentation was expanded and Shaker Loops was born. Adams’ treatment of dynamics, colour and range is so startling that one begins to wonder if this is really minimalism at all.
