Ravel described his melancholy ‘Pavane pour une infante défunte’ as “an evocation of a pavane that a little princess might, in former times, have danced at the Spanish court.” The baroque period was his inspiration for ‘Le Tombeau de Couperin’, a suite of dance movements, each one dedicated to a friend who had died in the First World War. Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen and his oboe concerto were both written in 1945. The oboe concerto is nostalgic, almost classical in form whilst Metamorphosen is a dark, unfolding lament for the destruction of Dresden influenced by Beethoven’s Eroica symphony.
