Mozart Serenade for Winds in E-flat Major, K. 375
Gounod Petite Symphonie

At 11 o’clock at night I was serenaded by [musicians] playing my own music. They gave me, just as I was about to undress for bed, the most delightful surprise in the world. These gentlemen are poor beggars who play together quite nicely all the same…

Mozart’s first impression, upon hearing the first, unexpected performance of his Serenade for Winds in E flat, seems to have been a favourable one. Alongside this masterpiece you can hear the The Swan wind players perform a lesser-known work by Gounod. Despite Gounod’s relative anonymity these days he was, however, an important influence on later French composers such as Faure and Debussy. An opportunity to see our wind players take centre stage.
