Care Home Workshops

Pairs of Orchestra of the Swan professional players have delivered free annual workshops in regional care homes in Warwickshire, Birmingham, Worcestershire, and Herefordshire since 2014, now numbering over 64 workshop sessions per year.

At each session, pairs of players perform live, playing requests from any genre with participants encouraged to clap, hum, sing or accompany on untuned percussion. Sessions take place in a communal room, giving all residents the opportunity to participate. For residents who are less mobile or at an advanced stage of dementia, players will visit individual rooms to ensure all are included.

If you are a care home and interested in Swan players delivering free sessions, please contact Megan Matthews our Head of Community Engagement on education@orchestraoftheswan.org

“You guys are just amazing. It's not just how brilliantly you play, but how you put it across, and your music choices are just right. It's like nothing else”

"Music is one of the biggest therapies for people living with dementia and we can see it on our residents' faces.”

“For people with dementia – even those who have lost their ability to communicate or are at the end of their life – music can be a powerful way to trigger positive feelings and connect with other people.”
