Trained Players

Since 2014, OOTS has delivered a programme of over 500 live performance workshops to people with dementia, their families, staff and carers in 40 care homes and 7 dementia cafés in Birmingham, Herefordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Nuneaton & Bedworth in partnership with music therapy charity Mindsong.  21 OOTS players are trained by Mindsong to deliver this activity, alongside receiving specialist mentoring and support.

Sue Pope, OOTS Learning & Participation Manager and Dementia Champion:

“Music has such a powerful role in supporting people at whatever stage of their dementia journey. It is such an amazing experience to see people come alive with the music; join in, tap their feet, sing along and really get involved with the sessions. We are so pleased to be able to bring our professional musicians to these homes & cafés and know that our players are gaining a great deal from the experience too.”

During our 2017/2018 season alone, OOTS delivered:

  • 71 workshops benefitting 688 people with dementia in 12 care homes
  • 7 workshops in 6 dementia cafés regionally
  • A pilot project entitled ‘Musicians on Call’ with 8 workshops at the Stratford Hospital benefitting 175 visitors

Sessions involve pairs of instruments performing classical pieces, hymns, folk songs and well-known participative songs in communal areas attended by those with dementia, carers and relatives. Performances also take place in care homes on a 1-2-1 basis in residents’ rooms for those unable to leave their beds.
